Acts of Resistance: UNpreferred Bodies & UNruly Play
Saturday, December 12, 2026
Who benefits when we learn to make ourselves smaller?
In a culture obsessed with looksmaxxing, shrinkage and mogging, clearly some bodies are celebrated while others are treated as problems to be corrected. Fatness, disability, aging, and other departures from dominant ideals become sites of scrutiny, shame, and exclusion.
But what happens when the UNpreferred body refuses to behave?
Through Developmental Transformations (DvT), we will explore how embodied improvisation and play can challenge the social, political, and interpersonal forces that determine which bodies are welcomed, desired, or permitted to take up space.
Together, we will investigate:
How cultural and political systems construct preferred and UNpreferred bodies.
The influence of fatphobia, beauty standards, and bodily optimization on identity and belonging.
How therapists' own bodies and internalized assumptions enter the playspace.
The possibilities of play as resistance, reclamation, and connection.
This experiential workshop integrates DvT theory, facilitated drama therapy, and clinical reflection. Participants are invited to engage without expectations of physical performance or personal disclosure. ALL BODIES WELCOME.
Open to mental health professionals, creative arts therapists, peer specialists, educators, students, artists, and others interested in embodied and relational practice. No previous DvT or Drama experience necessary. Drama Therapy, LCAT and Social Work CEs available.
